New York, NY (January 3, 2010) – The DeSales University women's basketball team had an unhappy start to the New Year, falling at Baruch College, 72-55, in a non-conference game on Sunday evening at the ARC Arena.
The Bulldogs (4-6 overall) saw some of the same troubles that plagued them to start the year come back to haunt them on Sunday as DSU shot just 21.6 percent (8-for-37) from the field in the second half as Baruch (8-3 overall) out-scored DeSales by nine points in the second half and led by as many as 19 to win easily.
DSU did open the game hot, opening up a 7-0 lead hitting three of its four shots including a three-pointer from senior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name). The Bearcats quickly answered with nine straight points to take a two-point lead at the 15:40 mark.
The game went back-and-forth over the next 11 minutes as the contest saw four ties and five lead changes, all in the first half. DSU trailed by one, 27-26, at the 4:32 mark before Baruch ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room. During the half-ending spurt, the Bulldogs were hurt by turnovers, committing five of their 11 first-half miscues during the final 4:32.
A three from freshman Taylor Greene (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) and a lay-up from senior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) pulled DeSales within seven early in the second half but 12-2 Baruch run mid-way thru the second half pushed a nine-point Bearcat lead into a 19-point advantage at the 9:40 mark and the hosts never looked back from there.
Miller finished with a team-high 15 points and had six rebounds as the lone double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Magrann had eight points, including two three-pointers, Greene had nine points off the bench and senior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) totaled seven points also off the bench in the loss.
The Bulldogs will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, January 6th when they host Cabrini College in another non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
