Volleyball Swept at Commonwealth/Freedom Crossover

Annville, PA (October 2, 2010) – In the first annual crossover between the Commonwealth and Freedom Conferences the DeSales University volleyball team was swept in two matches by Lebanon Valley College (3-2) and Elizabethtown College (3-1) in Annville, PA.

In the first match the Bulldogs (9-10 overall) won the first set over the Flying Dutchmen (12-5 overall), 25-23, but dropped the next two to fall behind 2-1. DSU tied the match up at two with a fourth set win but fell, 15-13, in the fifth set to drop the opening match. In the second match, DeSales again won the first set, 25-17, but dropped three close sets in the second, third, and fourth set to the Blue Jays (12-7 overall).

In the opener sophomore Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) led the way with a team-high 14 kills and four blocks. Senior Kyle Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added 10 kills, 28 digs, and seven blocks and junior Lauren Hickey (Ridley, PA/Ridley Park) added nine kills.

Freshman Haley Petrarca (Reading, PA/Wyomissing) totaled seven kills and four blocks, freshman Emilie Baker (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) finished with five kills and five blocks, sophomore Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) dished out 40 assists, added 18 digs, and had two blocks, and sophomore Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) totaled 24 digs as the libero.

In the second match Petrarca led the way with a season-high 14 kills. Fehnel added 10 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks and Hickey again had nine kills. Baker finished with six kills and two blocks, McNulty totaled five kills, 38 assists, and 18 digs, and Reichard totaled 20 digs. Horrigan totaled five kills and three blocks in the loss.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday evening when they return home to host Wilkes University in a critical Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
