Center Valley, PA (October 26, 2010) – The DeSales University men's soccer team won its fifth straight game, scoring two early goals and holding on to defeat Widener University, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improve to 12-4-2 overall with the win, while the Pride fall to 4-11-3 overall. WU out-shot DSU, 17-12, in the game and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Bulldogs got on the board just 6:43 into the contest when sophomore
Steve Krause (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern) was in perfect position to volley home the rebound of a saved header from junior
Derek Long (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser). It was Krause' fourth goal of the season.
In the 17th minute DSU scored what eventually turned out to be the game-winner. Senior
Sky Rimmele (Lenhartsville, PA/Moravian Academy) fed junior
Jonathan Balfour (London, England/Conestoga {PA}) in the middle of the field with a pass, who touched it to a streaking Long who fired a laser beam into the back of the net from about 20 yards out for his 15th goal of the year.
Widener got within one goal just 4:50 into the second half when
Bill Stangroom scored on a header off a cross from
Joe Brydges and had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick off the foot of
DJ DiPaola mid-way thru the second half but freshman
Mike Thompson (Glenmoore, PA/Bishop Shanahan), who was making his first career start in goal for the Bulldogs, made a diving stop to his left to preserve the one-goal lead.
Thompson finished with five saves, while DSU also had two team saves, clearing two shots off the line.
Jakub Valdner made two saves for the Pride.
DSU finishes its regular season schedule on Saturday when they host King's College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 2:00 pm. LIVE stats will be available on the DeSales web site for those unable to attend the game.
