BOX SCORE
Swarthmore, PA (November 13, 2010) – Nearly everyone in attendance was anticipating overtime but one final push by Swarthmore College netted a goal with 47.4 seconds left in regulation handing the DeSales University men's soccer team a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Swarthmore College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday evening at Clothier Field.
After the ball was cleared out of the Swarthmore defensive end,
Morgan Langley took control and streaked down the left sideline, narrowly beating a DeSales defender into the box. Langley pushed a pass just in front of the goal mouth where
Fabian Castro came flying into re-direct the pass just enough as the ball slid inches away from a diving
Adam Franczak (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and into the net for the game-winner with just 47.4 seconds left.
Swarthmore (16-1-3 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when
Kieran Reichert blasted a shot into the right-corner of the net from about 15 yards outside the box as that lead stood into the half.
DSU (15-5-2 overall) took control of play at the start of the second half, creating numerous goal scoring chances and eventually broke thru in the 63rd minute when junior
Jonathan Balfour (London, England/Conestoga {PA}) headed home a long throw-in from sophomore
Tyler Nolan (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) for his ninth tally of the season.
Both teams created chances over the final 27 minutes with the Garnet Tide getting the game-winner with under a minute left to go. Swat held a 25-12 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Franczak had another strong game in between the pipes, making six saves.
The Bulldogs finish the season having tied the school-record for wins with 15.
