Center Valley, PA, (September 1, 2010) – The DeSales University field hockey team had never lost to local rival Moravian College at home and that fact continued on Wednesday as a late tally from senior
Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) gave DSU a 1-0 lead and eventually the win in the 2010 season opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) dominated the stat sheet out-shooting the Greyhounds (0-1 overall), 10-2 for the game and holding a 10-5 edge in penalty corners, but the game remained scoreless as the clock ticked down to the final five minutes before Matthews took control of a loose ball in the circle and fired it past the MC keeper for the lone goal of the game.
The goal was Matthews' 33rd of her career as she moves into a tie for second place all-time with
Gina Malatesta. Matthews needs just three more tallies to take over sole possession of first place all-time in career goals.
The defense along with sophomore goalkeeper
Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) were up to the task on the other end of the field as they posted its first shutout of the season, as DelToro needed to make just one save on the two Moravian shots.
The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend when they travel to Frostburg State University for a non-conference game beginning at 11:00 am.
