Cambridge, MA (September 25, 2010) – The DeSales University volleyball team traveled up to Cambridge, MA for the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday and came away with a 1-3 record in four hard-fought matches with teams from the New England region.
On Friday, DSU posted a 1-1 mark to put itself into the silver bracket on Saturday where the Bulldogs dropped both matches. Friday, DeSales (9-7 overall) lost to Wellesley College, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23) before defeated Connecticut College, 3-2 (25-19, 31-29, 20-25, 25-27, 15-10). Saturday, DSU was tripped up by Endicott College, 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22) and then fell to Vassar College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) ending its trip.
Leading the way on Friday in the loss to Wellesley College was senior
Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) with 12 kills and two blocks. Junior
Lauren Hickey (Ridley, PA/Ridley Park) added 10 kills and two blocks and sophomore
Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) totaled six kills and five blocks. Freshman
Haley Petrarca (Reading, PA/Wyomissing) also had six kills, sophomore
Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) finished with five kills, 30 assists, three aces, and 10 digs, and sophomore
Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) totaled 17 digs.
In the win over Connecticut College, Fehnel had a team-high 16 kills, added 25 digs, and had two blocks. Horrigan finished with 13 kills and four blocks, hickey had 12 kills and three blocks, and freshman
Emilie Baker (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) totaled nine kills, two aces, 19 digs, and two blocks. McNulty totaled 52 assists and 21 digs, Reichard had 30 digs, Petrarca finished with seven kills, and freshman
Macy Farrell (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) totaled 15 digs and two aces.
In the first match on Saturday Fehnel had 15 kills and Petrarca added 10 kills. Horrigan had seven kills, while Hickey and Baker each had six kills. McNulty totaled 41 assists and 11 digs, Reichard had 27 digs, and Farrell finished with nine digs. Freshman
Claire DePew (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) served well with three aces in the match.
In the final match of the weekend Hickey led the way with seven kills, Petrarca added six kills, McNulty finished with 17 assists and seven digs, Reichard totaled 17 digs, and Baker had eight digs.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Misericordia University for a Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
