Derek Long (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) scored two goals leading the DeSales University men's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Baptist Bible College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 with the win, while the Defenders fall to 0-2 on the year. DSU enjoyed a 29-12 advantage in shots for the game and had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore
Adam Franczak (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and freshman
Mike Thompson (Glenmoore, Bishop Shanahan) again combined to record a shutout with Franczak making four saves and Thompson making two.
Long got the scoring started with an unassisted tally at the 27:09 mark as he dribbled thru the defense before firing a shot that found the back of the net. That goal was the only tally in the first half for either team as DeSales enjoyed a slim 1-0 edge at the break.
Sophomore
Steve Krause (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern) immediately gave the Bulldogs a two-goal cushion just 1:44 into the second half scoring off a cross from junior
Jonathan Balfour (London, England/Conestoga {PA}). Just under 15 minutes later Long made it a three-goal game with another unassisted tally at the 61:06 mark.
Senior
Rusty Helwig (Wescosville, PA/Emmaus) added his second goal of the season at the 67:35 mark on an assist from freshman
Josh Himes (Boyertown, PA/Oley Valley) and junior
Matt Murphy (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) finished off the scoring with a goal off an assist from sophomore
Padraic Farrell (Waterford, Ireland/Parkland {PA}).
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday when they host Ursinus College in a non-conference contest beginning at 3:00 pm.
