Horrigan Leads Way as Bulldogs Take Second at Hopkins Invitational

Sophomore Paige Horrigan had 13 kills and six blocks in the win over Hopkins and earned All-Tournament honors with teammate, senior Kylie Fehnel this weekend.

Baltimore, MD, (September 4, 2010) – The DeSales University volleyball team posted a 2-1 record at the Johns Hopkins University Invitational, good for second place at the tournament, as sophomore Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and senior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) led the way, each earning All-Tournament honors for the Bulldogs.

On Friday, DeSales opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Goucher College by scores of 25-23, 29-27, and 25-16. Fehnel totaled 11 kills, three service aces, and three blocks. Sophomore Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) had seven kills, 22 assists, and 12 digs and junior Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) finished with five kills and seven digs in the win.

In the second match on Friday, the Bulldogs fell to eventual tournament champion Geneva College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16). Fehnel finished with seven kills; Horrigan added six kills and just one error and sophomore Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) finished with 13 digs in the loss.

On Saturday afternoon the Bulldogs took on tournament host Johns Hopkins University and despite dropping the first two sets, DSU rallied to win the next three to take the match and second place in the tournament. Game scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-9.

Fehnel totaled 14 kills, three blocks, and three aces; Horrigan had 13 kills, just one error and six blocks, McNulty finished with seven kills, 47 assists, and 25 digs, and Reichard had 31 digs. Freshman Emilie Baker (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) broke out with 12 kills and four service aces, Hickey added nine kills, and freshman Haley Petrarca (Reading, PA/Wyomissing) finished with seven kills.

The Bulldogs get all week off before traveling cross-town to the Muhlenberg College Tournament on Friday and Saturday to face Muhlenberg, Moravian, and Neumann University.
