BOX SCORE
Center Valley, PA, (September 7, 2010) – All three DeSales University seniors scored a goal helping the field hockey team start the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since the 2005 season with a 3-2 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College on another beautiful afternoon in Center Valley, PA.
The Bulldogs (3-0) controlled play most of the game out-shooting the Griffins (1-1 overall), 20-6, and holding an 11-5 edge in penalty corners. DSU was first on the scoreboard when senior
Amy Pulcini (Easton, PA/Easton) took a pass from junior
Carla Nunez (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) thru the entire GMC defense and dribbled to the keeper before firing a shot into the cage. It was Pulcini's second tally of the season.
The Griffins tied the game just over two minutes later but DSU re-took the lead before halftime when senior
Kelsey Strowhouer (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) touched in a pass from freshman
Sam Lavin (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) at the 27:37 mark as the Bulldogs enjoyed a 2-1 halftime edge.
In the second half senior
Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) got into the scoring act when she took control of her own rebounded shot and pushed the ball past the Griffin goalkeeper. It was Matthews' third goal of the season and the 35th of her career, tying her with
Ashley Sparango for the all-time lead at DeSales.
GMC added a second goal to pull within one at the 63:37 mark but never threatened over the final six minutes as DeSales recorded its fifth straight win dating back to last season. Sophomore
Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made two saves in between the pipes.
DeSales stays at home this week with two more home games including the next one scheduled for Thursday, September 9th vs. Cedar Crest College beginning at 4:00 pm. LIVE Stats will be available on the DeSales web site on game day.
