Purchase, NY (October 1, 2011) – Senior
Jon Mill scored off a corner kick breaking a tie at one with 4:37 left in the game lifting the DeSales University men's soccer team past Manhattanville Colllege, 2-1, in the first Freedom Conference game of the season for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
DSU (8-2-1, 1-0 Freedom) has now won five straight and is unbeaten (9-0-1) in its last 10 Freedom Conference games including the post-season. Manhattanville (8-2, 0-1 Freedom) out-shot the Bulldogs, 22-11, and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks but the Bulldog defense was up to the task, allowing just one goal in the win.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at the 16:06 mark when senior
Jonathan Balfour headed in a long throw-in from junior
Tyler Nolan for his seventh tally of the year. That goal stood up, giving DSU a 1-0 halftime lead.
Manhattanville tied it at one at the 65:56 mark when
Emil Sjoberg scored on a header off a corner kick feed from
Adam Kent, before Mill's game-winner in the 86th minute. The game-winner came on DeSales' only corner of the game as senior
Sky Rimmele fed the box and Mill was there to knock it home after two Valiant defenders collided opening the door for Mill.
Freshman
Colin Sulpizio continued his stellar play in between the pipes with seven saves for DeSales.
DSU returns to action on Wednesday, October 5th when they host Marywood University in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
