Center Valley, PA (December 20, 2011) – Junior
Brett Moyer scored a game-high 20 points and senior
Bob Zanneo went for 14 tallies, including three straight three's in the second half, leading the DeSales University men's basketball team past Kean University, 61-45, in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.
Moyer shot 8-for-10 from the field and also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, while Zanneo was 4-for-9 from downtown. Freshman
Ryan Griffin continued his solid play with eight points and seven assists as eight of the 10 Bulldogs that saw action reached the scoring column.
Kean got 12 points from
Kyle Latorre, but he was the lone player in double digits as the Cougars (2-8) shot just 36.0 percent from the field.
Kean had control early in this game as DSU seemed disoriented by the Cougar's 2-3 zone as KU scored 10 straight points including a back-door alley-oop dunk from
Ryan Duffy to lead 10-2 at the 14:31 mark.
From that point on it was all Bulldogs as they chipped away at the margin and eventually took the lead at 20-18 on lay-up from Moyer. DSU extended the lead to as many as seven points and still led by seven at the break, 29-22.
The second-half was once again all DeSales. Leading by eight at the 12:51 mark, Zanneo connected on three straight three-pointers on DSU's next four possessions, giving the Bulldogs a 14-point lead (47-33) and Kean never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
DeSales dominated the glass, out-rebounding Kean, 36-26, leading to 15 second-chance points and took excellent care of the ball committing just eight turnovers and handing out 20 assists on 24 made baskets in the win.
The Bulldogs are off until the New Year now, returning to action on Tuesday, January 3rd when they host Berkeley College (NY) in the opening game of the Red Robin Holiday Tournament beginning at 6:00 pm. Alvernia University and SUNY-Potsdam will be the other two teams participating in the tournament.
