Allentown, PA (September 1, 2011) – Three different players scored twice and seven different players registered at least one point in leading the DeSales University women's soccer team past Cedar Crest College, 8-0, in a non-conference affair to get the 2011 season started.
It is the fifth straight win for the Bulldogs over the Falcons, all via shutout. The scoring started 10 minutes into the game when sophomore
Ariel Merkt scored her first career goal on a cross from sophomore
Brady Walsh that was not able to be cleared by the CCC goaltender. Junior transfer
Stephanie Barnett made it 2-0, scoring off a feed from sophomore
Lydia Younger at 16:33 and Barnett assisted on DSU's third goal, a blast from senior
Haley Vollmer at 24:34 from about 10 yards outside the box.
Walsh finished off the first-half scoring, taking a thru ball, beating a defender and firing a shot just right of the Falcon goalkeeper for her first tally of the season.
Barnett started the scoring at 68:36 in the second half on a feed from senior
Amanda Fink. The assist was Fink's 15th of her career, two shy of tying the all-time record. Sophomore
Christina Quinn made it 6-0, capitalizing on a CCC mistake when a shot went thru the goalkeeper's legs and was cleared by a defender but right to Quinn who knocked a shot off the left post and into the net.
Vollmer added her second tally of the game, another long blast from just about the same spot as her first one into the upper right corner and Walsh finished the scoring volleying a corner kick feed from Vollmer into the net with just 1:20 left to play.
Three keepers saw action in net for the Bulldogs including senior
Melissa Millili, freshman
Michelle Churchman, and freshman
Alex Bastinelli, totaling four saves in the win.
The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan University for a tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
