BOX SCORE
Bethlehem, PA (September 2, 2011) – Senior
Jonathan Balfour registered a hat trick leading the DeSales University men's soccer team past Moravian College, 5-0, in the first game of the season for both teams on Friday afternoon.
DeSales controlled play all afternoon, out-shooting Moravian, 22-7, for the game and holding a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Junior
Steve Krause started the scoring just over three minutes into the game, ripping a shot from the top of the box past a defenseless Greyhound goalkeeper staking DSU to a one-goal lead.
The one goal score remained over the next 34+ minutes until Balfour struck for his first tally, taking a pass from senior
Matthew Germscheid on the left side of the box and fired a shot past a diving keeper.
The 2-0 lead held into the half but was increased to 3-0 just 3:41 into the second half when Balfour cleaned up the rebound of a saved shot off the foot of fellow senior
Sky Rimmele before anyone was able to clear it.
Balfour completed his hat trick in the 71st minute on virtually the same play as his previous goal, cleaning up another saved shot from the Greyhound keeper again off the foot of Rimmele. Rimmele earned assists on both plays.
Sophomore
Alec Dimitriadis provided the final margin re-directing a centering pass from senior
Matt Murphy in the 86th minute just past the out-stretched hand of the Moravian keeper.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Mike Thompson made six saves to record his first career shutout in his second career start in goal.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow evening when they take on its other local rival, Muhlenberg College, beginning at 6:00 pm at Muhlenberg.
