Center Valley, PA (September 26, 2011) – Two goals in the last 6:23 turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win over Lebanon Valley College as the DeSales University men's soccer team won its third straight game in a non-conference affair on a warm Monday afternoon.
Sophomore
Zach Davis was the hero, recording his first points of the season, assisting on the tying goal and scoring the game-winner for the Bulldogs (6-2-1). The win moves DSU's unbeaten streak at home to 12, including nine straight wins.
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when junior
Steve Krause sent a free kick into the middle of the box and senior
Jon Mill was there to just nip it past the Flying Dutchmen (6-3) keeper and into the net. That lead was short lived however as LVC countered with a goal from
Travis Miller off an assist from
Connor McDonald 3:13 later and that score remained into the half.
LVC took its 2-1 lead at 57:11 when
Kevin Doty connected from about 30 yards out, when his missile curled inside the far post after a short pass on a corner kick from Miller.
The Bulldogs put some extra pressure on around the 10-minute mark and seconds before they scored the tying goal, senior
Nicholas Alderiso stepped into a shot from about 25 yards out and hit the bottom portion of the crossbar as the ball bounced straight down and then straight up in the air where the LVC goalkeeper grabbed it
A quick long punt was headed back into the fray by a DSU defender and Davis looped a pass over the top to senior
Derek Long on the right side as he flipped a shot over a charging keeper and the ball trickled into the net, tying the game at two. It was Long's ninth tally of the season and the 42nd of his career, moving into a tie for fourth place all-time.
With just under a minute left, DeSales took advantage of another chance in the box. Senior
Jonathan Balfour blasted a shot just as the LVC keeper charged out to a loose ball and the rebound of the shot went off Balfour's leg to Davis just to the right and he was there to knock the ball home with 48 second left giving DSU a one-goal lead and eventually the win.
James Clements made five saves for the Flying Dutchmen, while sophomore
Mike Thompson had three saves. Freshman
Colin Sulpizio played the last 21+ minutes in between the pipes for the Bulldogs, not recording a save, but earning the win in net. LVC held a slight 15-14 edge in shot and a 10-7 advantage in corner kicks for the game.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, September 28th when they travel to Albright College for another non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
