Allentown, PA (September 3, 2011) – The DeSales University men's soccer team suffered a tough loss on Saturday night falling to one of its local rivals, Muhlenberg College, 2-0 on two second-half goals by the Mules in a non-conference game under the lights.
The Bulldogs (1-1 overall) came to play on Saturday night but were just unable to find the back of the net against a very good Muhlenberg defense. DeSales controlled play and was the aggressor for most of the game as the shot totals finished 15-13 in favor of Muhlenberg, but DSU held a healthy advantage on corner kicks at 10-2, forcing several more dangerous situations in the box throughout the game.
After a scoreless first half of play, Muhlenberg put a one on the scoreboard in the 50th minute when
Danny Way narrowly beat DSU's freshman keeper,
Collin Sulpizio, to a crossing pass, just touching the ball past Sulpizio as it trickled into the left corner of the net for the game's first goal.
The second goal was scored on a free kick from 19 yards out just outside the center of the box after DSU had pushed almost its entire lineup up field looking to tie the game with under 10 minutes left and a long clear saw the Bulldogs commit an unfortunate foul giving Muhlenberg a free kick from close range that
Nate Squire put away in the upper right corner to provide the final tally.
Sulpizio made four saves in between the pipes in his first collegiate start.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Lebanon Valley College in the first home game of the season beginning at 4:00 pm.
