Center Valley, PA (October 12, 2013) – Freshman Alexa Beaumont scored twice, including the game-winner 5:48 into the first overtime, giving the DeSales University field hockey team a 2-1 win over FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The win snaps a seven-game losing streak to the Devils (5-7, 2-1 Freedom) and moves DSU (6-7, 2-1 Freedom) into a five-way tie for first place in the Freedom Conference standings with four games left to play this season.

The Devils struck first as Alicia Grotyohann scored in the 20th minute off an assist from Lanie Andrews, but the Bulldogs wasted no time evening the score when Beaumont scored her first of the game and the fourth of the season off an assist from sophomore Jesse Marshall at 24:26.

The game remained tied into the half as each team had seven shots and DSU held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

The second-half was full of action despite neither team scoring as DeSales had the best chance at finding the game-winner in regulation late in the half when sophomore Meryah Harding blasted a shot off a corner feed with just over five minutes left that hit the post so hard it caromed straight back outside the circle.

Both teams had chances in the overtime period before DeSales finally broke thru just 5:48 into the first extra period.  Harding sent a crossing pass into the goalie that was touched by junior Alison Malatesta as he touch skidded past the goalkeeper to the back post where Beaumont was to make sure it found the back of the cage setting off a bench clearing celebration for the Bulldogs.

The shots remained even as both teams attempted 15 and the Devils finished with an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.  Sophomore Becky Rasmuson was again stellar in goal making five big saves in the win.

DSU is off all week before returning to action on Saturday, October 19th for another important Freedom Conference game at Manhattanville College beginning at 1:00 pm.
