Strong Team Effort Gives Bulldogs Sweep of Home Tri-Match

The Bulldogs hit .302 and .250 as a team in the two matches on Saturday vs. PSU-Berks and Widener.

Center Valley, PA (October 8, 2013) – The DeSales University volleyball team played two of its most complete matches all season on Saturday as every player contributed in a positive was en route to a sweep of a home tri-match with PSU-Berks and Widener University.

The Bulldogs didn't lost a set on Saturday defeating the Nittany Lions, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-15), and Widener University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) to run their season record to 14-10 overall and their current win streak to four straight, the longest win streak of the season.

The tone for the day was set in the very first set of the first match with PSU-Berks as the Bulldogs had to come from behind 21-19 to earn a 25-23 win on a kill from freshman Lauren Hess on set point after a tremendous one-handed diving dig from fellow freshman Lisa Wallitsch during the point kept the rally alive.  DSU cruised the rest of the way vs. the Nittany Lions in sets two and three hitting .302 for the match and totaling nine team blocks.

Hess led the charge with 16 kills and hit .519, while junior Chrissy Banos hit .643 with nine kills and no errors and added five blocks.  Senior Emilie Baker had eight kills and freshman Arielle Nicholson and senior Madeline Svrcek each had four kills in the win.

Five players had double digit digs demonstrating some tremendous team defense in the back including Svrcek with 14, L. Wallitsch with 13 digs, graduate student Justine McNulty with 12 digs, junior Amanda Wallitsch with 11 digs, and Hess with 10 digs.  McNulty added 38 assists and L. Wallitsch had a match-high three service aces.

In the second match, DSU trailed 21-19 in the first set, 19-18 in the second set, and 20-16 in the third set before rallying in each set for the straight set win.

Hess was once again outstanding with 22 kills and a .421 hitting percentage.  Nicholson had nine kills and hit .412, Banos played strong once again with eight kills and hit .350, while Svrcek finished with five kills and no errors for a .357 hitting percentage.  Banos added three blocks and Svrcek finished with 14 digs.

A. Wallitsch led the defensive charge this match with a team-high 19 digs and McNulty finished with 41 assists, eight digs, and three blocks, including two solo blocks.  L. Wallitsch also had eight digs.

The Bulldogs will put their four-match win streak on the line on Wednesday, October 16th when they travel to Wilkes University for a Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
