Center Valley, PA (October 23, 2013) – Sophomore
Jesse Marshall scored twice erasing a 1-0 deficit and leading the DeSales University field hockey team to its fourth straight Freedom Conference win, 2-1, over Misericordia University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (8-7, 4-1 Freedom) have now won three straight overall and inch ever so close to clinching just their second-ever Freedom Conference playoff berth. DeSales has won four Freedom Conference games this season after winning just five (5-31) over the last five years in the Freedom. One more win will clinch a spot in the playoffs and two more wins will clinch no worse than the #2 seed and at least one home playoff game.
On Wednesday, DSU had to come from behind once again as the Cougars scored first, just 5:17 into the game, on a goal from
Lindsay Hischak off a centering pass from
Hannah Harvey.
The Bulldogs began to tilt the field their way mid-way thru the first half and eventually tied the game just 4:49 before the half as Marshall scored her fifth of the season, knocking in a centering pass from junior
Alison Malatesta.
It was Marshall again in the 51st minute with the eventual game-winner as senior
Sam Szathmary dribbled around a defender on a corner feed and found Marshall in front of the goalie where she fired a shot inside the right post giving DSU a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs dominated the second-half out-shooting the Cougars, 17-3, and 24-8 for the game. DSU also had a 21-10 edge in penalty corners for the game. Sophomore
Becky Rasmuson was once again strong in the cage, making one save.
DSU will get its first chance at clinching its spot in the playoffs on Saturday, when they travel to Wilkes University with game time set for 5:00 pm.
