St. David's, PA (November 9, 2013) – The DeSales University volleyball team saw its season come to an end, falling to Eastern University, 3-0, in the championship match of the Freedom Conference playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs finish the season with a 19-15 overall record. DSU advanced to the Freedom Conference title match for the sixth time in the last seven years but fell to Eastern for the fifth time in those six appearances.
DSU fell behind early trailing the Eagles 7-0 and 12-1 in the first set but did battle back to pull within 17-13 on consecutive attack errors from Eastern. The score was 19-14 when back-to-back kills and two straight service aces from EU made it a 23-14 lead and eventually a 25-18 first set win.
In the second set, DSU led 6-3 in the early stages before Eastern went on an 11-1 run to lead 14-7 and cruised the rest of the set. In the third set it was tight early once again after a kill from senior
Madeline Svrcek as DSU trailed 6-5, but again Eastern responded with five straight points to lead 11-5 before finishing off the match by a 25-13 third set score.
Svrcek played well for the Bulldogs finishing with six kills and a .227 hitting percentage along with a team-high 11 digs. Freshman
Lauren Hess added five kills, freshman
Lisa Wallitsch finished with 10 assists and six digs, and graduate student
Justine McNulty had six assists and five digs in the loss.
