Allentown, PA (September 6, 2013) – The DeSales University volleyball team split its two matches on Friday at the Buttermaker Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College, defeating Rutgers-Camden, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-7), before falling to nationally ranked Salisbury University, 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 23-25).
The Bulldogs opened the day easily defeating the Scarlet Raptors in straight sets. DSU hit .384 for the match and .682 in the third set alone. Freshman
Lauren Hess totaled 13 kills and hit .476, while senior
Emilie Baker added nine kills and hit .467.
Senior
Madeline Svrcek finished with seven kills and 12 digs and junior
Amanda Wallitsch totaled 11 digs. Graduate student
Justine McNulty finished with 18 assists and freshman
Lisa Wallitsch had 13 assists and seven digs. Junior
Chrissy Banos led the way with three blocks.
In the nightcap, DSU gave nationally ranked Salisbury all it could handle in a hard-fought four set-loss with each of the last three sets decided by just two points.
Hess again led the charge with 18 kills and added two blocks. Svrcek added nine kills and 15 digs, Baker finished with eight kills and four blocks, while Banos and freshman
Arielle Nicholson each had four blocks in the loss.
McNulty finished with 36 assists and a team-high 23 digs, while A. Wallitsch had 22 digs leaving her just six shy of 1,000 digs in her career.
The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Neumann University and Moravian College in day two of the tournament beginning at 10:00 am.
