Center Valley, PA (October 16, 2014) – Senior
Brady Walsh broke the single-game record for goals (4) and points (8) leading the DeSales University women's soccer team past Manhattanville College, 6-1, keeping the Bulldogs unbeaten in Freedom Conference play this season on Thursday afternoon.
Walsh scored four times breaking the previous mark of three goals in a game accomplished seven different times including once by Walsh herself. The eight points is also a record snapping the previous mark of seven held by three different players.
The win is also a milestone for the Bulldogs (6-5-3, 3-0 Freedom) as a team defeating the Valiants (2-10-1, 0-2-1 Freedom) for the first time in school-history in eight career meetings. DSU has now won three straight and is unbeaten in four straight games.
Walsh started the scoring just 3:56 into the game when she orchestrated a perfect give-and-go with sophomore
Jess Wetherhold in the box leading to the goal. She scored her second just 1:55 later taking a thru pass from sophomore
Eve Barna and dribbling around the goalie to score into the open net. Walsh earned her hat trick in the 18
th minute scoring unassisted recovering her own rebound of a saved shot.
MVille got on the board in the 35
th minute when
Melissa Barcia got to a loose ball in the box on the left side and hit a shot just over the out-stretched hand of senior
Michelle Churchman to cut the margin down to 3-1 but it was all Bulldogs from there.
DSU got one more goal before the end of the half when freshman
Angelica Bertola scored her first career marker on her third shot in a matter of seconds as the first one was blocked, the second one was saved, and finally on her third attempt off the rebound of the saved shot, she scored.
Walsh then broke the record 7:36 into the second-half as Wetherhold sent a long pass over the top where Walsh collected it in the box and beat a charging keeper to the left side.
Freshman
Emily Calatayud provided the exclamation point off assists from Barna and fellow freshman
Gabby Lucchese in the 60
th minute.
DSU out-shot the Valiants, 28-3, and had a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Churchman made one save in 66+ minutes of action before freshman
Shannon Pennella made her collegiate debut in between the pipes but didn't need to make a save.
The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround returning to action on Saturday when they travel to FDU-Florham for an important Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:30 pm.
