Center Valley, PA (October 31, 2014) – Senior
Brady Walsh had one goal and one assist leading the DeSales University women's soccer to a 2-2 double overtime draw with #15 Misericordia University in the Freedom Conference regular season finale for both teams on Friday afternoon.
Both teams finish the regular season with a 6-0-1 record in Freedom Conference play but the Bulldogs (9-5-4 overall) earn the tiebreaker and will be the #1 seed in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament. The Cougars (15-2-1 overall) will be the #2 seed. DSU's opening round opponent will be determined tomorrow with four teams still in contention on the final day of play tomorrow.
The tie extends DSU's unbeaten streak to eight straight games (6-0-2 record) which is a new school-record snapping a record previously set in 2006. It is also the first time in program history DSU has earned a top two seed in the post-season tournament. The tournament berth is the fourth overall and the first since the 2008 season.
Misericordia got on the board first scoring at 11:44 when
Megan Mahoney took a pass in the box and side stepped senior
Michelle Churchman to fire a shot into an open net.
DSU wasted no time countering as Walsh had control of the ball in the box and slipped a pass back to sophomore
Jess Wetherhold who let go on a shot from just outside the box that bent inside the left post to tie the score at one 46 seconds after MU's tally.
The game remained tied into the 24
th minute when DSU committed an unfortunate foul in the box awarding the Cougars a penalty kick which Mahoney cashed in on inside the right corner and MU took that 2-1 lead into the half.
In the second-half the Bulldogs drew even 6:42 into the half when Walsh broke free and had a 1-v-1 with the keeper but was taken down just inside the box from behind giving DSU a PK that Walsh scored on to tie the score at two.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the half or in either overtime with the best chance coming for the Cougars midway thru the first overtime when DSU cleared a ball off the line to preserve the tie. Both teams also had chances inside the two-minute mark of regulation when Wetherhold broke free at the top of the box with under two to play but lost a tough battle on a 50/50 ball and on the counter Mahoney broke free on the right side and tried to slip a shot low past Churchman who was there to make the fingertip save.
MU had a 28-6 edge in shots and a 13-5 advantage on shots on goal. Churchman was terrific in between the pipes making 10 saves. MU also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks for the game.
The Bulldogs opponent and game time will be announced either late on Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon following a conference call with the four teams that qualify for the tournament.
