Center Valley, PA (November 1, 2014) – Misericordia University scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of the game to rally from a 1-0 deficit handing the DeSales University men's soccer team a 2-1 loss in the season finale for the Bulldogs on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Freedom Conference action.
After a scoreless first half that saw just eight total shots, freshman
Joey Malvestuto started the scoring hitting a rocket from just outside the box into the upper 90 inside the left post to give the Bulldogs (7-11-1, 2-5 Freedom) a 1-0 lead.
Misericordia ramped up its offensive pressure after the goal and started peppering the DeSales net. Senior
Damien Romaine made a few acrobatic saves to keep the Cougars scoreless but in the 73
rd minute MU got a fortunate bounce tying the game at one when
Niko Amity's shot ricocheted of a Bulldog defender's leg and re-directed into the net past Romaine who seemed in position to make the save before the re-direction.
Less than five minutes later Misericordia (12-5-2, 6-1 Freedom) found the game-winner when
Derek Antonini sent a cross into the box where
Chris Edkins flicked the ball to
Rob Wiacek who scored inside the left post to make it a 2-1 game.
MU enjoyed a 23-7 edge in shots, and a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Romaine was terrific in net making six saves for the Bulldogs. Misericordia also had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
