Poor Shooting Dooms Bulldogs in Double OT Loss to Rosemont

Center Valley, PA (December 8, 2014) – Sophomore Morgan McCollian scored a game and career-high 26 points but the Bulldogs shot just 26.4 percent from the field and despite game-tying shots at the end of both regulation and the first overtime from DeSales, Rosemont came from behind in the second overtime to earn a 72-70 win in a double overtime thriller on Monday evening in Billera Hall.

Rosemont seemed to have this game in hand mid-way thru the second-half leading by 10 points (49-39) before a 9-0 run pulled DSU within one (49-48) with 4:53 left to play.  RC pushed the lead up to five points on a jumper from Carly Hislop with 3:08 remaining but then went cold from both the field and the free throw line.

After consecutive free throw misses from the Ravens' (2-6 overall) Liz Coyne DSU still trailed by five with 31 seconds left before sophomore Megan Baird hit DSU's (5-3 overall) first three-pointer of the game with 22 ticks remaining to pull the Bulldogs within two (55-53) with 22 seconds left.

Another miss by Coyne on the charity stripe gave DSU possession with 21 seconds left and junior Kelly Anthony was fouled on lay-up attempt with five seconds left.  After a timeout she hit nothing but net on the first free throw as Rosemont called another timeout in an attempt to ice Anthony but she was up to the task hitting the second free throw as the Ravens were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Neither team could make a shot to start the first OT period as the first points were scored with 2:26 left on the free throw line by RC's Dominique Sellers.  The two teams traded free throws for the next 1:43 and after two from Baird made it a 60-59 game with Rosemont in front and 43 seconds left, the Bulldogs fouled Brianna Macauley on a drive to the basket with 27 ticks left.

She hit just one FT but a turnover on the rebound of the miss gave RC the ball back.  Sellers was fouled with 18 seconds left and she hit the first free throw making it a three-point game but missed the second as DSU had life.  With time winding down and no timeouts, junior Gabby Scott had the ball in her hands and was forced to toss up a deep three from just in front of the Bulldogs bench that hit the backboard and banked home as the buzzer sounded forcing a second overtime period.

This time the two team's started hot from the field trading baskets and DSU took a two-point lead (68-66) on a lay-up from McCollian with 3:01 left before the Ravens' Jasmyn Parker hit a three pointer on the ensuing possession, just Rosemont's third three of the game, to give RC a 69-68 lead.

McCollian made 1-of-2 charity tosses on the next possession and then 1-of-2 51 seconds later to give DSU a 70-69 lead.  Anthony drew a charge on the next Ravens possession but a missed lay-up from Scott gave Rosemont possession and Anthony committed a foul in the backcourt sending Sellers to the line for two shots with 38 ticks left.

Sellers knocked both free throws down and after a missed lay-up from McCollian on the other end DSU was forced to foul again with Coyne converting just 1-of-2 giving RC a 72-70 lead.  DSU called timeout in front of its bench with 4.7 seconds left but on the ensuing inbounds play Scott was caught without anywhere to go with a pass, drove the lane and saw her runner fall off to the left as the buzzer sounded.

McCollian finished 9-of-15 from the floor and added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year.  Baird finished with 14 points and Anthony was outstanding on the glass pulling down a game and career-high 16 rebounds.

Coyne led Rosemont with 24 points and eight rebounds.  Sellers and Hislop each had 10 points and Kierra Smith finished with seven points and 16 rebounds off the bench.

Rosemont had an out-standing second-half hitting 55.0 percent, while the Bulldogs converted just 30.6 of their attempts but attempted 16 more shots than the Ravens.  For the game DeSales attempted 91 shots and shot 26.4 percent as compared to just 56 shots and 37.5 percent shooting for Rosemont.  DSU controlled the glass out-rebounding RC, 62-52, and forced 25 turnovers as compared to committing just 17 themselves.  RC was 27-for-42 from the free throw line and DSU 20-for-28.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Muhlenberg College beginning at 2:00 pm.
