Center Valley, PA (January 31, 2015) – Sophomore
Morgan McCollian recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 19 rebounds leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past King's College, 60-54, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
The win gives the Bulldogs (11-8, 5-3 Freedom) the season sweep over King's (8-11, 4-4 Freedom). DSU shot just 30.4 percent from the field but dominated the paint scoring 28 of its 60 points in the paint and owned a 53-32 advantage on the glass including 24 offensive boards leading to 20 second-chance points.
McCollian added three blocks to her seventh double-double of the year and sophomore
Megan Baird was also in double digits with 13 points and was outstanding on the defensive end making four steals and served as the primary defender on KC's leading scorer
Kayla Feairheller who was held to just two points. Senior
Alex Suk and freshman
Angelica Bertola provided a lift off the bench scoring eight points each in the win.
Jennifer Fabian led the Lady Monarchs with 14 points and
Kasey Seitz added nine points in the loss.
The Bulldogs led almost the entire first-half but never by more than six points and the game was tied at the break after KC's
Rachel Detore hit a running jumper as the buzzer sounded tying the game at 26. McCollian led all scorers 11 points and the Lady Monarchs hit four three-pointers.
DSU scored the first six points of the half to lead by six (32-26) after a steal and lay-up from sophomore
Nikki Callahan. King's clawed back using an 11-2 run over the span of 3:35 to take a 39-36 lead that was quickly erased by a three from Bertola on DSU's next possession.
Defense took over from there as the two teams combined for just 12 points over the next 8:46 minutes as the Bulldogs clung to a two point lead (46-44) with 6:27 remaining.
A steal by freshman
Colleen Durkee led to a fast break for the Bulldogs in which Baird finished a short jumper in the paint and added a free throw after a foul for a three-point play giving DSU a 49-44 lead with 4:40 to go.
Two empty possessions by King's saw Suk knock down two free throws making it a three-possession game with 3:45 on the clock and a jumper from Durkee pushed the lead to nine points at 2:35 and DeSales iced the game from the free throw line hitting 6-of-10 over the final 50 seconds.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Misericordia University for another important Freedom Conference road game beginning at 6:00 pm.
