Bulldogs Advance to MAC Freedom Title Game with 3-1 Win over King’s

Center Valley, PA (November 3, 2015) – Juniors Rachel Shive and Jess Wetherhold each scored second-half goals leading the second seeded DeSales University women's soccer team past third seeded King's College, 3-1, in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom postseason tournament on a picture perfect Tuesday afternoon.

The win advances the Bulldogs (13-5 overall) into the MAC Freedom championship game on Saturday where DSU will face the winner of the other semifinal match-up between top seeded Misericordia and fourth seeded Wilkes slated for Tuesday evening.

The victory also sets a new single-season record for wins surpassing the previous mark of 12 wins set during the 2001 season.

DSU got on the board first at 25:05 when sophomore Danni Engwall fed a ball through the Monarch (8-7-2 overall) defense to sophomore Angelica Bertola.  Bertola took two touches and fired a long shot off the far post and into the net for her 12th tally of the year and a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

KC answered in the 39th minute when a handball was called just outside the box in the center of the field on the Bulldogs.  Amy Barge lined up the free kick and beat the DSU keeper just under the crossbar and inside the left post tying the score at one as that score stood into the half.

The game remained tied 30 minutes into the second half when Shive got the game-winner.  She took a pass from freshman Sydney Gandy in the box, took one touch past a defender and fired a shot inside the far post giving the Bulldogs the lead for good.  It was Shive's 17th goal of the season, pulling her one short of tying the single-season record.

Wetherhold then gave DSU some insurance getting control of a clear in the box and blasting a shot in the upper 90 for her sixth marker of the year just 4:46 after Shive's game-winner.

DSU finished the game with a 16-11 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.  King's had a big edge in corner kicks, 9-1.  Junior Emily Hoats had three saves and the DSU defense accounted for two saves on the post off corner kicks in the win.

Game time for Saturday's game will be announced on the women's soccer schedule page following the other semifinal result tonight.
