Big Second-Half Spoils Women’s Hoops at FDU

Madison, NJ (February 14, 2015) – #4 FDU-Florham out-scored the DeSales University women's basketball team, 49-25, in the second-half to pull away for an 82-53 win in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.

Sophomore Morgan McCollian led the Bulldogs (13-10, 7-5 Freedom) with 14 points and added seven rebounds, while junior Jen Napolitano added 12 points, equaling her career-high, off the bench.  Freshman Kaitlin Kelly also shot well with eight points off the bench.

FDU (22-1, 11-1 Freedom) got 17 points, 14 rebounds, and eight steals from junior Shalette Brown to lead the way.  Alyssa McDonough added 16 points and five assists, Kyra Dayon added 11 points, and Alicia Cox finished with 10 points off the pine in the win.

DeSales was the aggressor early taking an 11-3 lead on a three from senior Mikelyn Mackavage before the Devils chipped away and tied the game at 11 with eight straight points.

A baseline jumper from Napolitano gave DSU a 15-13 lead with 10:57 to go but Florham went on a 16-0 run over the next 4:27 to take a 29-15 lead with 6:13 left in the opening half.

The Bulldogs answered that spurt with 13-2 spurt of its own led by two three's from Kelly before FDU scored the final jumper of the half giving the Devils a 33-28 lead at the break.

Florham was fast out of the second-half gates scoring the first 12 points to take a 45-28 lead and after some back-and-forth action over the next eight minutes the Devils used a 14-2 run to take a 75-44 lead and cruised in from there.

Florham shot 50.0 percent from the field in the second-half to pull away.  The Bulldogs were hurt by 26 turnovers and also at the free throw line hitting just 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) in the loss.

The Bulldogs are now tied for third place in the Freedom Conference standings with Delaware Valley College but do currently own the tiebreaker over the Aggies.  DSU remains one game ahead of King's College and can clinch a Freedom Conference playoff berth with one more win.

DeSales next chance at clinching that playoff spot comes on Tuesday evening when they host Manhattanville College in Billera Hall beginning at 6:00 pm.
