Chris Moran hit a bank three-pointer as the buzzer sounded giving Delaware Valley College a 77-74 win snapping the DeSales University men's basketball team six-game winning streak in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
It was a tie game at 70 with 3:06 to play when sophomore
Kuity Slanger hit a driving lay-up and after a defensive stop on the other end, senior
Travis Bryan was fouled on the rebound and hit both free throws giving DSU a 74-70 lead with 2:02 to play.
Both teams exchanged turnovers and Slanger was fouled on the ensuing Bulldogs possession but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and senior
Francis Arnold made two free throws on the other end after being fouled going to the hoop.
DSU turned the ball over again leading to an uncontested lay-up from Arnold tying the game at 74 with 35 seconds left. After a few timeouts, Slanger was again fouled driving to the hoop, going to the line for two shots, but he missed both as the Aggies grabbed the rebound with 1.6 seconds on clock.
DVC inbounded from just in front of the DeSales bench as the pass went to a cutting Moran in front of the scorer's table just over half-court and his desperation attempt banked off the glass and in as time expired giving Delaware Valley the three-point win.
Junior
Cody Deal led DeSales (15-6, 7-3 Freedom) with 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore
Brian Laird had 15 points and Bryan finished with 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Slanger totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and sophomore
Ryan Callahan was again strong off the bench with eight points and seven boards.
Arnold finished with a game-high 23 points to lead the Aggies (13-8, 8-2 Freedom).
Barry Brockington was outstanding off the bench for Delaware Valley, hitting five 3's and totaling 19 points, and Moran was also in double digits with 13 points.
The game featured 12 ties total and 16 lead changes. The largest lead in the first-half was just four, held by both teams at various times and after the two teams combined for 11 points in the last minute of the first-half, a Slanger lay-up at the first-half buzzer gave DeSales a 35-34 lead heading into the locker room.
The 10
th tie of the game came at 40-all with 16:59 left when Laird went on a tear scoring nine straight points including a four-point play as the Bulldogs went on a 12-3 run to take a 52-43 lead on a three from Deal.
Another three from Deal with 11:33 to go made it an eight point DeSales lead (59-51) before a 7-0 Aggie run made it a one-point game with 10:10 to play. The lead changed hands three times for the tie at 70 was forged setting up the final three minutes of the game.
The Bulldogs shot well, hitting 51.7 percent from the field, and dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Aggies, 43-23, leading to 15 second-chance points as compared to just two for the Aggies. Delaware Valley however committed just three turnovers in the game as compared to 15 for the Bulldogs. The Aggies hit 11 three-pointers on 27 attempts in the win.
DeSales falls into third place in the Freedom Conference standings with four more games and two more weeks left in the regular season. The Bulldogs are just one-game behind both Misericordia and these Aggies and those two teams will meet on Wednesday next week. DSU returns to action on Wednesday as well it hosts Wilkes University in a critical Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
