Lafferty Walk-Off Wins it for DeSales, 6-5 over Ursinus

Center Valley, PA (April 23, 2015) – Freshman Conner Lafferty roped a two-run double off the wall with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifting the DeSales University baseball team past Ursinus College, 6-5, in a chilly non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (19-12 overall) trailed 5-3 entering the bottom half of the ninth inning.  Junior Alec Hardy opened the inning with a lead-off single down the left field line.  Sophomore Tommy DePaul walked to put runners on first and second and freshman Hunter Hart bunted them into scoring position.

Senior Drew Borger came up with a big one out base hit to right field scoring pinch-runner, sophomore Tyler Sweeney, but freshman Randal Pacchioli struck out for the second out of the inning.  Junior Colby Kulig worked a five pitch walk loading the bases and Lafferty smacked a pitch into left center field that one hopped the fence easily scoring two runs giving the Bulldogs the win.

Ursinus (16-13 overall) had led the entire game taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  DSU cut the margin in half with one run in the fourth when DePaul walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single from Borger.

UC led 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning when DSU struck for two runs to make it 5-3 as Kulig and junior Carlos Urena each had RBI singles in the inning setting up the ninth heroics.

Freshman Kevin Benjamin earned his first career win on the bump pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.  Borger led a 13-hit attack with a 3-for-4 line including two runs scored and two RBIs.  DePaul scored twice, Kulig and Urena each had two hits, and Lafferty knocked in two to lead the offense.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they open its three-game weekend set with Wilkes University beginning at 3:30 pm up at Artillery Park in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
