Center Valley, PA (January 4, 2016) – Juniors
Morgan McCollian and
Nicole Umbenhauer combined for 29 points leading the DeSales University women's basketball team to its third straight win, 65-56, over Ursinus College in non-conference action on Monday evening in Billera Hall.
McCollian finished with a game-high tying 18 points, while Umbenhauer notched double digits for the first time in her career with 11 tallies and a career-high four steals to lead DeSales (7-4).
Ursinus (5-5) got 18 points from
Jessica Porada and
Alyssa Polimeni totaled 11 points in the loss.
Elana Roadcloud pulled down a game-high 14 boards for the Bears.
A close game thru the first seven minutes of the first quarter was broken open over the final 3:03 of the quarter when DSU used a 9-0 run to take an 11-point lead (20-9) at the end of the quarter. Four different players scored in the run including both McCollian and Umbenhauer. The lead grew to 13 twice in the second quarter before the Bulldogs settled for a 34-23 advantage into the locker rooms.
DeSales started quickly in the second-half scoring seven of the first nine points of the third quarter to take its largest lead of the game (41-25) with 7:45 left in the quarter.
Ursinus refused to go away slowly chipping away at the lead using a 13-3 run over the span of just under five minutes to pull within six (44-38) with 3:03 left to play in the third
McCollian answered the spurt with a three-point play as DeSales regained its 11-point halftime advantage at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth Ursinus pulled to within seven points once but McCollian again had the answer with three straight points to push the lead back to double digits with less than two minutes left before the final margin was posted.
DSU out-scored Ursinus 44-22 in the paint and took advantage of 22 Bear turnovers scoring 25 points off those turnovers, including 16 fast break points.
Umbenhauer earns
A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game honors recording career-highs in both points and steals in the win off the bench.
DeSales is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
