Women's Hoops Win Streak Snapped at Six in Loss at Juniata

Huntingdon Valley, PA (December 30, 2016) - The DeSales University women's basketball saw its win streak snapped at six games falling at Juniata College, 71-68, in the championship game of the Eagles Holiday Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Leandra Sterner led the offensive charge with 18 points off the bench, senior Morgan McCollian had 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, and sophomore Morgan Birmelin finished with 10 points in the loss.

Juniata (7-3) got 39 points from two players, Katy Leamer with 20 tallies and Dani Atkinson with 19 points in the win.

The Bulldogs (8-2) were down five at the half but seemed to take control of the game in the third quarter out-scoring the hosts, 22-14, to take a three-point lead into the final quarter.

DeSales then went cold in the fourth quarter missing its first seven shots as Juniata built a 63-58 lead scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the quarter.  Down four with 2:37 to go Sterner hit back-to-back shots on consecutive possessions to tie the score at 68 with 2:07 left to play.

The Bulldogs got a defensive stop on the next possession but an off-balance jumper from senior Megan Baird was off the mark for DSU giving the Eagles possession with 40 seconds left.

Out of a timeout JC worked the ball around and Leamer was fouled on the low block as she knocked down both free throws.  DeSales advanced the ball to halfcourt where after dribbling around the key junior Kaitlin Kelly found McCollian on the low block but her jumper while being double teamed was off and Juniata came down with the board.  The Eagles made just 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds left but down three the Bulldogs were unable to get a three-pointer off before the buzzer sounded.

After shooting 42.3 percent in the opening half, DSU hit just 34.1 percent in the second-half.  The Bulldogs did force 23 turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers and dominated the paint out-scoring Juniata, 40-14, inside the lane.  DSU was just 2-for-12 from three-point land.

DeSales returns to action on January 4th as they open MAC Freedom play hosting Eastern University at Billera Hall beginning at 6:00 pm.
