Baseball Rolls Past Haverford, 12-1

Center Valley, PA (March 16, 2016) – The DeSales University baseball team scored 10 runs over the first three innings dominating Haverford College on Wednesday afternoon in a 12-1 win over the Fords in non-conference action at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs (3-4) scored three times in the first and second innings and plated four more runs in the third to open up their 10-0 lead.

In the first junior Tommy DePaul led off with a bunt single and came around to score along with fellow junior Mike Kacergis on a two-run single from senior Alec Hardy.  Sophomore Conner Lafferty reached via walk and scored one batter later on a throwing error from the Ford shortstop.

In the second Kacergis knocked in two runs with a single to centerfield plating DePaul and freshman Tommy Epsaro and DePaul also had an RBI hit scoring junior Tyler Sweeney.  In the third senior Colby Kulig, Kacergis, and Hardy each had RBIs.

There was a brief 45 minute rain delay due to lightning in the area before the start of the fourth inning but the Bulldog pitching did the rest after the brief delay as junior Tyler Cooperman and senior Kevin Benjamin five straight 1-2-3 innings between the fourth and eighth innings before Haverford (8-2) broke up the shutout with a two-out bunt single in the ninth inning.

The Bulldogs banged out 14 hits in the win as compared to just three for the Fords.  DSU pitching struck out nine and walked just one as Cooperman earned his second win of the season pitching three perfect innings of relief for senior Chris Zampini who did not return after the rain delay.

DePaul finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Kacergis had two hits and three RBIs, Lafferty had two hits and scored once, and Hardy was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.  Seven of the nine starters had hits and all nine reached base safely at least once in the win.

DeSales returns to action on Friday when they travel to Misericordia University for a MAC Freedom game beginning at 3:30 pm.
