Women's Hoops Wins 39th Straight over Wilkes, 78-50

Center Valley, PA (January 18, 2017) - The DeSales University women's basketball team won its 39th straight game in the series with Wilkes University, rolling past the Colonels, 78-50, in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

DeSales (12-4, 4-1 MAC Freedom) was led by sophomore Leandra Sterner with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while senior Morgan McCollian finished with 13 points and four blocks and sophomore Katie Miller added 11 points and four assists. Senior Nikki Callahan also played well totaling five points, a career-high eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks in the win.  Junior Kaitlin Kelly led a 27 point effort from the bench with eight points including the 100th three of her career, making her just the seventh player in team history to make 100 3's in a career.

Wilkes (4-11, 0-5 MAC Freedom) got 11 points from Emily Sofranko and 10 points from Haley Mesaros in the loss.

DeSales never trailed and held the lead for just under 39 minutes in the win.  Tied at four early in the first quarter the Bulldogs began to pull away using a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead and led by 10 points (23-13) at the end of the first quarter.  The lead swelled to as many as 17 points in the second quarter before DSU enjoyed a 42-28 halftime lead.

The game was put out of reach in the third quarter when the Bulldogs out-scored the Colonels, 17-7, taking a 59-35 lead entering the final quarter before the final was posted.

DSU shot 46.8 percent from the field and committed just 13 turnovers as compared to handing out 23 assists.  The Bulldogs defense also forced 20 turnovers and held the Colonels to just 31.3 percent shooting.

DeSales is right back to action on Saturday when they travel to Misericordia University for a big road test with the Cougars set to begin at 1:00 pm.
