Men's Soccer Advances to Championship Game with Win in PK's at King's

Wilkes-Barre, PA (November 1, 2017) - The DeSales University men's soccer team advanced to the MAC Freedom championship game with a 4-3 win in penalty kicks at King's College on Wednesday evening in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament semifinals.

The win moves DeSales into the championship game for the first time since the 2010 season.  The third seeded Bulldogs will travel to the top seed, Eastern University, on Saturday with game time set for 2:00 pm.

Neither team could find the back of the net in regulation or in two overtimes on Wednesday as King's out-shot DeSales, 16-8, and had a slim 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.  Senior Dan Sulpizio (Philadelphia, PA) recorded his school-record 11th shutout of the year making five saves in between the pipes.

In the shootout both teams made two and missed two thru the first four shots.  After King's missed its fifth attempt, DSU had a chance to advance but sophomore Ian Patmore (Red Lion, PA) sent his attempt over the crossbar.

The two teams moved to sudden death in the shootout and King's converted on its attempt.  Senior Joey Malvestuto (Philadelphia, PA) stepped up needing to score to keep the Bulldogs' chances alive as his shot was saved by the Monarchs keeper but the keeper moved off his line early and the shot was replayed with Malvestuto scoring the second time.

The Monarchs then missed its next attempt and junior Alex DiRienzo (Newark, DE) stepped up with a chance to win the game as his shot found the back of the net giving DSU a 4-3 win in PK's advancing them into the title game.

The game goes down as a tie for the official record moving DSU to 12-2-5 for the season.
