Glenside, PA (November 29, 2017) - The DeSales University women's basketball team saw a fourth quarter comeback fall just short for the second straight game falling at Arcadia University, 66-61, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs (3-2) got a team-high 14 points from freshman
Jillian Martin (Quakertown, PA), 13 points from junior
Leandra Sterner (Northampton, PA), 12 tallies from senior
Angelica Bertola (East Stroudsburg, PA), and 10 points from senior
Kaitlin Kelly (Newtown, PA) in the loss.
Arcadia (3-2) was led by
Camille Menns with 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven steals,Â
Sydney Cyr with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists,Â
Kylie Fischer with 14 points off the bench, and Â
Taylor Dunn with 13 points and six helpers.
After trailing the entire third quarter, DSU battled back to tie the game at 52 on consecutive lay-ups from Martin to start the fourth quarter. AU had the answer though scoring the next eight points to take a 60-52 lead with 5:18 left to play.
The Bulldogs still trailed by eight with 2:18 to go when they began a late comeback. A lay-up from Kelly cut it to six and after a stop on the defensive end, Sterner converted a short jumper to cut the margin down to four points with 56 seconds left.
DeSales forced a turnover and Sterner capitalized with a three from the top of the key making it a 62-61 game with 41 seconds left. DSU committed a foul on the other end with 26 seconds left as Dunn sank both freebies making it a three-point game.
Junior
Morgan Birmelin (Honesdale, PA) got a good look on a tying three but a tie up on the rebound gave possession to the Knights and Menns sank two free throws after a foul sealing the win.
DSU fell behind early but used a 15-4 run to end the first and begin the second quarter to take a 22-16 lead. Arcadia had the answer though finishing the second stanza on an 18-6 run to take a 34-28 lead into the locker room. DeSales went scoreless for nearly six minutes during the half-ending spurt for the Knights.
The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 44.4 percent from the field but hit just 56.3 percent from the free throw line. DSU forced 21 AU turnovers but were out-rebounded, 41-30, for the game.
DeSales is back in action on Saturday when they host the Sage College beginning at 2:00 pm in Billera Hall.
