Dominant Second-Half Leads Women’s Hoops over King’s, 81-54

Wilkes-Barre, PA (February 11, 2017) – The DeSales University women's basketball team out-scored King's College, 48-24, over the final two quarters on Saturday afternoon in an 81-54 win over the Monarchs in MAC Freedom action.

Four players reached double digits including senior Megan Baird and sophomore Leandra Sterner with 15 each.  Sophomore Morgan Birmelin added 11 points and fellow sophomore Bridget Walsh had 10 points and five boards off the bench.  Senior Nikki Callahan had six assists and sophomore Katie Miller finished with four assists and four steals.

King's (4-18, 2-10 MAC Freedom) was led by freshman Rebecca Prociak with 15 points, while Olivia Hoffman and Erin Schmidt each had 10 points.

The Bulldogs (18-5, 10-2 MAC Freedom) opened the game with a three from Baird, the 100th of her career making her the eighth player in team history with 100+ career treys, and led thru most of the first quarter before King's tied it on a free throw with 27 seconds left.

The Monarchs had a 30-27 advantage late in the second quarter but the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 half closing run on lay-ups from Sterner, Walsh, and senior Nicole Umbenhauer to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room.

The second-half was all DeSales as they broke a tie at 33 with a 17-5 run to take a 50-38 lead and never really looked back from there.  DSU shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the second-half and 49.2 percent for the game.

The Bulldogs also had a huge advantage out-scoring King's 26-2 off turnovers forcing 20 Monarch miscues and committing just 12 their own.

Baird is named the A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game hitting 4-of-5 from outside the arc and knocking down the 100th triple of her career.

DSU returns home on Valentine's Day when they host Misericordia in a very important MAC Freedom contest with the winner clinching a home MAC Freedom playoff game and no worse than the #2 seed in the postseason.
