Morgan McCollian recorded her fifth double-double of the season totaling 25 points and 12 rebounds leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past Delaware Valley University, 80-66, in the final regular season game of the season on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (19-6, 11-3 MAC Freedom) tied with Misericordia University in second place in the MAC Freedom but lose the tiebreaker and will be the #3 seed in the MAC Freedom postseason next week traveling to MU on Wednesday with tip set for 7:00 pm. FDU-Florham will be the top seed and will host fourth seeded Eastern University in the other semifinal. The two winners will meet Saturday at the highest remaining seed for the MAC Freedom championship.
McCollian finished 10-for-15 from the field to lead DSU. Sophomore
Leandra Sterner had 19 points off the bench, senior
Megan Baird finished with 13 points, senior
Nikki Callahan had a game-high seven assists, and sophomore
Morgan Birmelin added six points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the win. Sophomore
Bridget Walsh also played well with nine points and six rebounds.
The Aggies (9-16, 5-9 MAC Freedom) got 20 points from freshman
Ashley Smink, 13 points from
Sam Foy, and 10 points each from
Monika Smallwood and
Danielle Skedzielewski in the loss.
After a back-and-forth start to the game that saw DVU leading 8-7, DSU finished the first quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 21-11 lead. The lead grew to as many as 13 points early in the second quarter until Del.Val. rallied tying the game at 36 before a McCollian three-point play gave the Bulldogs a 39-36 lead at the halftime break.
It was all Bulldogs in the third quarter as DeSales started the second-half with an 18-3 run to take a 57-39 lead and never really looked back from there.
DeSales finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the field and committed just 10 turnovers as compared to handing out 24 assists. The Bulldogs also controlled the paint out-scoring the Aggies, 48-12, inside the lane and had 29 second-chance points.
McCollian earns
A.B.E. Doors and Windows Player of the Game honors recorded her fifth career double-double.
