Big Second-Half Leads Women's Hoops past Eastern, 60-33

Center Valley, PA (January 27, 2018) - The DeSales University women's basketbal team shot 55.2 percent in the second-half out-scoring Eastern University, 37-14, in the second-half en route to a 60-33 win in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

Junior Leandra Sterner (Northampton, PA) led all scorers with 16 points and junior Morgan Birmelin (Honesdale, PA) got into double figures with 10 points and added four assists and four steals.  Sophomore Molly Jansco (Newfoundland, PA) continued her strong play with eight points and eight rebounds and senior Kaitlin Kelly (Newtown, PA) added eight tallies.  Freshman Cailee Murphy (Bethlehem, PA) came off the bench to score a season-high nine points.

Eastern (4-15, 1-7 MAC Freedom) got a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds from Regie Robinson in the loss.

DeSales had its defense rolling early holding EU to just six points over the first 15:03 of the game before the Eagles caught fire and ended the half on a 13-5 run to pull within four points (23-19) at the break.  DSU really struggled from the field in the first-half hitting just 27.8 percent from the field.

The second-half was all Bulldogs (10-9, 5-3 MAC Freedom).  After EU's Amanda Riiff opened the half with a baseline three, DSU scored the next 15 points to open up a 16-point lead and never looked back from there.  Sterner led the charge with eight points, Kelly hit a triple, and Jansco had four tallies during the spurt.

DSU held Eastern to just 24.1 percent shooting and finished the game shooting 40.0 percent after a strong second-half from the field.  DSU also doubled up EU in the paint, out-scoring the visitor's, 28-14 and fiested off 22 Eagle turnovers scoring 22 points.

DeSales is back in action on Wednesday when they host Manhattanville College in a very important MAC Freedom game set to begin at 6:00 pm.
