Field Hockey Advances Back to MAC Freedom Championship Game with 3-2 Win over Wilkes

Center Valley, PA (October 31, 2018) - Junior Kylie Honnick-Payne scored two goals leading the DeSales University field hockey team past Wilkes University, 3-2, in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom postseason tournament on Wednesday evening.

  • Records: DeSales (11-7 overall); Wilkes (8-10 overall)
Notes
  • It is the second straight year DeSales has advanced into the MAC Freedom Championship game.  DSU will travel to FDU-Florham for the title game at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
  • The game today was DSU's first-ever home playoff game.
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs scored first when Honnick-Payne took a long pass from junior Christie Hansen and beat a charging Colonel keeper for the game's first goal.
  • Wilkes tied the score at 19:05 on a goal from Maddie Kelley and that score stood into the half.
  • DSU took the lead for good 8:55 into the second-half on sophomore Hannah Williams 10th goal of the year and Honnick-Payne added the insurance tally at 54:26.
  • The Colonels got back to within one goal with 6:44 left to play and had a corner with under five minutes on the clock to tie the score but the Bulldogs defense kept them off the board the rest of the way to earn the win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • The two goals for Honnick-Payne give her 12 for the season and 36 for her career moving her into second place all-time and just three goals behind the all-time record of 39 tallies.
  • Honnick-Payne also moved into second place all-time in points with her 91st career points tonight.
  • Hansen added two assists giving her 14 on the season, tying the single-season record set in 2014 by Alison Malatesta.
  • Williams' goal was her 11th of the season and freshman Olivia Witmer had an assist on Honnick-Payne's second goal.
  • Junior Katarina Polyviou made three saves in the cage.
For the Foes
  • Haley Gayoski had a goal and an assist, while Maddie Kelley (one goal) and Lauren Shiplett (one assist) also contributed on the offense.
  • Dallas Kendra made seven saves in goal.
