Women's Basketball Rolls Past Stevens, 84-56, in Morgan Stanley Tournament Championship

Center Valley, PA (November 18, 2018) - The DeSales University women's basketball team rolled past Stevens Institute of Technology, 84-56, to take home the Morgan Stanley (Easton office) Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 84, Stevens - 56
  • Records: DeSales (3-0); Stevens (3-1)
How it Happened
  • DSU used a 13-4 run to end the first quarter pushing a 10-9 lead into a 23-13 lead after one quarter.  Junior Molly Jansco (6) and freshman Samantha Shinkus (4) led the charge.
  • Stevens pulled to within four (26-22) after five straight points in the second quarter with 4:12 left in the half before the Bulldogs finished the half on an 11-2 run hitting six free throws during the spurt to take a 37-24 lead at the half.
  • The second-half was all Bulldogs as they opened up a lead as high as 32 points late in the fourth quarter and out-scored the Ducks, 47-32, over the final 20 minutes.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Senior Leandra Sterner earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors with a game-high 21 points in the win over Stevens, averaging 21.0 points in the two tournament games.
  • Also earning All-Tournament team honors were senior Morgan Birmelin, Jansco, and Shinkus.
  • Birmelin had 10 points and seven assists on Sunday averaging 10 points and 7.5 assists over the two games.
  • Jansco had 10 points and four rebounds on Sunday averaging 12 points and 5.5 rebounds over the two tournament games.
  • Shinkus has 18 points and six rebounds in championship game win, averaging 11 points and five rebounds on the weekend.
  • Freshman Averi Jordan also played well on Sunday totaling nine points and nine boards, while fellow freshman Rylie Rittenhouse was terrific off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds.
For the Foes
  • The Ducks got a team-high 17 points from Jess Broad, who earned All-Tournament team honors for Stevens,
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU shot 50+ percent in three of the four quarters and 43.5 percent for the game.
  • The Bulldogs forced 32 Duck turnovers leading to 35 points and out-scored SIT, 34-8 in fast break points.
  • DeSales won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Stevens, 43-35.
  • DSU is now averaging 99.7 points over its first three games.

  • DeSales leaves Billera Hall and will tackle its first road test on Tuesday when they travel to cross-town rival Moravian College for its annual game before Thanksgiving beginning at 6:00 pm.
