Women's Basketball Rolls to Fourth Straight Win, 88-62, over UW-Platteville

Bronx, NY (December 28, 2018) - Five players scored in double digits led by senior Leandra Sterner with 18 points leading the DeSales University women's basketball team to its fourth straight win, 88-62, over University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Lehman College.

How it Happened
  • After the Pioneers scored the first basket of the game, DSU used a 15-0 run shooting 7-for-8 from the field and forcing five turnovers led by Sterner with six points and freshman Samantha Shinkus added five tallies to take a 15-2 lead
  • UW-Platteville answered with a long 16-4 spurt to pull within one point (19-18) at the 7:34 mark of the second quarter.
  • It was a three-point game (26-23) midway thru the second quarter when the Bulldogs finished the half on a 17-7 run to take a 43-30 halftime lead.  Sterner had seven and senior Morgan Birmelin totaled six points in the run.
  • DeSales scored the first eight points of the second-half to take a 51-30 before UW-Platteville scored nine straight to get within 12 points (51-39) at the 4:20 mark of the third quarter.
  • DSU once again had the answer using a 14-2 run to take a 24-point lead and never looked back from there in the win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sterner scored her team-high 18 points all in the first-half and added three steals.
  • Shinkus finished with 17 points and recorded her first-ever double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds.  She also added five assists.
  • Freshman Averi Jordan finished with 14 points and sophomore Isabel Caruso came off the bench to score 13 points.
  • Birmelin finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
For the Foes
  • Caitlyn Tipton led the Pioneers with a game-high 19 points.
  • Morgan Hortsman had 12 points and Maiah Domask finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales torched the nets shooting 48.5 percent for the game and hit 8-for-19 (42.1%) from outside the arc.
  • The Bulldogs forced 20 Pioneer turnovers leading to 23 points.
  • UW-Platteville had a 41-39 advantage on the glass.
Up Next
  • The Bulldogs will take on Trinity College (CT) in the championship game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
  • Trinity will be the second DeSales opponent in the last three games with an undefeated record. DSU defeated Muhlenberg College, handing the Mules their first loss of the season back on December 18th.  Trinity will enter tomorrow's game 9-0 and receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll.
