Late Run Leads Men's Basketball past Johnson & Wales, 91-78; Al Senavitis Memorial Title

Center Valley, PA (December 30, 2018) - The DeSales University men's basketball team used a 15-0 run over a two-minute stretch very late in the game to take a 91-78 win over Johnson & Wales University in the championship game of the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament in Billera Hall on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • Johnson & Wales took control of this game early, using an 11-1 run early to take a 22-12 lead.
  • The Bulldogs fought back and tied it twice in the first-half but were never able to regain the lead and trailed by two (41-39) at the break.
  • The second-half was back-and-forth for the first 17 1/2 minutes featuring seven lead changes and 11 ties.
  • The final tie game at the 3:29 mark on a jumper from J&W's Brian Hogan-Gary.
  • Sophomore Matt Kachelries broke the tie with a free throw starting the 15-0 run and was followed by a three from junior Tracy Simsick and another trey from Kachelries pushed the lead to seven at the :33 mark.
  • After a missed jumper from J&W, the Wildcats were whistled for a personal foul and a technical foul leading to four Kachelries free throws.
  • A Simsick steal and dunk followed by another Wildcat technical foul put the exclamation point on this win as the run was capped at 15-0 over the span of two minutes.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Kachelries earned Tournament MVP honors finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
  • Simsick earned All-Tournament Team honors with a career-high 30 points and added six rebounds and three steals.
  • Senior Luke Connaghan also earned All-Tournament Team honors finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in today's win.
  • Junior Julian Wing also played well with seven points and a career-high 10 assists.
For the Foes
  • Hogan-Gary earned All-Tournament team honors with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Danny Ampofo and Donovian Maxfield each had 14 points and Matt Madoian totaled 12 points.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU shot very well hitting 55.8 percent from the field and 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from outside the arc.
  • DeSales out-rebounded J&W, 33-26, and handed out 22 assists on 29 baskets.
