Women's Basketball Falls to FDU-Florham in MAC Freedom Championship

Madison, NJ (February 24, 2018) - The DeSales University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end falling to FDU-Florham, 76-59, in the MAC Freedom championship game on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (16-11) see their season come to an end having advanced to the conference title game for the fourth time in the last five years.

Junior Bridget Walsh (Dunmore, PA) had an outstanding finish to the year and again played well today finishing with a game-high 22 points and recorded a double-double, her sixth of the year, with 12 rebounds.  She also added five blocks.  Senior Kaitlin Kelly (Newtown, PA) finished her career with 10 points in her final game, hitting two 3's giving her 170 in her career, ranking her third all-time.  Junior Morgan Birmelin (Honesdale, PA) finished with nine points and six assists in the loss.

The Devils (21-6) got 21 points each from Kendrea Williams and Gabrielle Harris, while Bria Smith added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Taiah Thornton finished with 11 points.

DeSales got off to a great start on Saturday opening up a 15-7 lead after a corner three from Birmelin at the 3:43 mark of the first quarter.  The Bulldogs went cold from that point as FDU finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the score and eventually went up 10 (27-17) after a 20-2 run over the span of 11:10 to take control.  Lay-ups from sophomore Molly Jansco (Newfoundland, PA) and freshman Kristina Polak (Bethlehem, PA) to end the half pulled DeSales within eight at the break as neither team shot well over the first 20 minutes.

Florham exploded in the third quarter out-scoring DSU, 29-16, building as much as a 23-point lead and never looked back from there in the win.

The Bulldogs shot the ball much better in the second half (51.4 percent) but FDU matched their shooting, hitting 55.2 percent themselves.  DeSales did control the paint out-scoring the Devils, 38-24, but FDU hit 9 three-pointers and shot 45.0 percent from outside the arc.
