Volleyball Drops Two on Day Two of Marymount Tournament

Arlington, VA (October 5, 2019) - The DeSales University dropped two hard fought matches on day two of the Maryount University Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Match #1 (L/2-3 vs. PSU-Behrend)
DSU fell behind 2-0 but showed no quit winning a tight third set with four straight points to end the set for a 25-20 win and dominated the fourth set winning 25-13.  The fifth set was back and forth the entire way and say DSU leading 14-13 with a chance to win the match.  An attack error tied it at 14 before a kill from senior Morghan Shoemaker gave DSU its second chance at winning the match.  A kill from Behrend tied the match again at 15 and the Nittany Lions won the next two points to close out the match.

Shoemaker led the attack with 18 kills and a .469 hitting percentage.  Freshman Caroline Garretson added eight kills and five blocks, senior Jenna Sievert had eight kills, and freshman Diane Pugay finished with 10 kills and four blocks.

Senior Cristal Fernandez had 28 digs and senior Taylor Aron had 11 digs.  Sophomore Audrey Wolfe finished with 42 assists and 13 digs.

Match #2 (L/0-3 vs. Virginia Wesleyan)
Despite the straight set loss this match was also a tight one.  DSU dropped the first set, 25-23, as VWU shook off a late tie at 23 to win the final two points after DSU had erased a 21-176 deficit to the set at 23.  Virginia Wesleyan won the second set, 25-17, before another tight third set the score tied at 17.  WU led 24-22 before the Bulldogs shook of one match point but were unable to win the second as Virginia Wesleyan took the match with a 25-23 third set win.

Freshman Delanie Zohler led the attack with 11 kills, while Pugay, Shoemaker, and Garretson each had seven kills.  Wolfe finished with 34 assists and 11 digs and Fernandez had 18 digs in the loss.

The Bulldogs are right back to action on Tuesday when they host FDU-Florham in an important MAC Freedom match-up beginning at 7:00 pm in Billera Hall.
