Late Surge Leads Men's Basketball Past Old Westbury, 85-81

Center Valley, PA (November 17, 2021) - The DeSales University men's basketball team used a 16-6 run over the final 3:49 leading to an 85-81 win over The College at Old Westbury in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 85, Old Westbury - 81
  • Records: DeSales (4-0 Overall); Old Westbury (2-1 Overall)
  • It was the second career meeting between the two and DSU's first win in the series after Old Westbury took the first meeting back in 2019.
  • DSU opens a full season 4-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
How it Happened
  • DeSales was out of the gates quickly taking a 15-5 lead over the first five minutes as junior Jordan Holmqvist hit two 3's.
  • DSU continued to lead thru most of the first-half with the Panthers taking a brief one-point lead at the 2:25 mark before the game was tied at 41 entering the halftime locker room.
  • Old Westbury came out of the locker room hot opening up a 58-50 lead early in the second-half as the Bulldogs struggled to score.
  • The Bulldogs chipped away at the margin, getting within two points (60-58) at the 9:58 mark before a 7-0 run gave them their first lead of the second-half at the 7:40 mark on a three-point play from sophomore Mason Barnes.
  • The Panthers answered with eight straight points taking a 73-67 lead and still led by six (75-69) with 4:20 left to play.
  • DeSales got a couple of stops and hit 5-of-6 free throws over the next three possessions to get within one and tied the game at 77 with 2:11 to go on a free throw from senior Mike Bealer.
  • Both teams exchanged free throws on the next two possessions as the game remained tied at 79.
  • Out of a timeout with 50 ticks left Holmqvist was fouled in the corner and calmly knocked down both free throws to give DSU a 2-point advantage and the Bulldogs forced a 10-second back court violation regaining possession with 40 seconds left.
  • Senior Matt Kachelries then put the exclamation point on the win putting a Panther defender on ice skates and finishing in the lane giving the Bulldogs a four point lead and then iced the win with two free throws with 10 seconds left to post the final tally.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Holmqvist led DeSales with 16 points, 14 coming in the first-half.
  • Barnes came off the bench to score 14 points and had three steals.
  • Kachelries added 13 points and handed out four assists and senior Dat Lambert also reached double digits with 12 points.
  • Sophomore Elijah Eberly had nine points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
For the Foes
  • Jonathan Jamieson led all scorers with 21 points.
  • Zachary Cummings finished with 18 points and Max Weinberg had 16 points off the pine.
  • Charles Wingate added 10 tallies.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU had just eight turnovers in the game, forcing 15 Panther miscues leading to 12 more shots.
  • Old Westbury shot an impressive 91.3 percent from the free throw line.
  • Both teams made 10 3's.
