Bench Propels Men's Basketball Past Lycoming, 63-59; Bulldogs Host MAC Freedom Title Game

Center Valley, PA (March 13, 2021) - The DeSales University men's basketball team got 33 of its 63 points from its bench in a 63-59 win over Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon clinching the top seed and the right to host the MAC Freedom Championship game next week.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 63, Lycoming - 59
  • Records: DeSales (9-1, 7-1 MAC Freedom); Lycoming (4-2, 4-2 MAC Freedom)
  • The Bulldogs clinch the top seed and will be the host for the MAC Freedom Championship game on Friday evening with tip set for 7:00 pm against these same Lycoming College Warriors.
How it Happened
  • DeSales dominated the first 15 minutes of this game opening up the largest lead of the game (26-8) at the 6:30 mark on a three-point play from sophomore Darnell Vaughan Jr..
  • The lead was 17 at the 5:57 mark when the Warriors caught fire hitting several 3's over the final five minutes and going on a 17-4 run to end the half cutting the margin down to four points (32-28) at the break.
  • The Bulldogs pushed its advantage back to seven points early in the second-half before eight straight Warrior points gave the visitor's its first lead of the game.
  • That lead grew to as many as five points at the 11:12 mark.
  • DSU continued to trail by one (50-49) with 6:46 to go before a 10-4 run put the Bulldogs up five with 1:32 to go.
  • Junior Keba Mitchell had a tip-in and freshman Elijah Eberly hit a lay-up off a sweet feed from sophomore Aidan Ellwood late in the run.
  • Lycoming got within two points with 21 seconds left but Eberly found Ellwood on the press break for a lay-up and junior Dat Lambert hit two clutch free throws with 2.5 seconds left to ice the game.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Eberly led DeSales with 12 points off the bench and Lambert was huge in the second-half with all 11 of his points off the pine.
  • Senior Timmy Edwards added 10 points before leaving the game early in the second-half with an ankle injury.
  • Ellwood stuffed the stat sheet finishing with eight points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
  • Freshman Mason Barnes handed out a game-high six assists.
For the Foes
  • Dyson Harward finished with 15 points and Mo Terry added 14 points for the Warriors.
  • Brendon Blackston totaled 11 points off the bench.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs held Lycoming to 36.8 percent shooting for the game and hit 49.1 percent on its own attempts.
  • DSU scored 38 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Warriors, 37-29.
