Edwards Putback Lifts Men's Basketball past Misericordia, 84-82

Dallas, PA (January 29, 2022) - Senior Timmy Edwards hit a put-back lay-up with two seconds left lifting the DeSales University men's basketball team past Misericordia University, 84-82, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 84, Misericordia - 82
  • Records: DeSales (17-2, 10-1 MAC Freedom); Misericordia (7-12, 5-6 MAC Freedom)
  • The win is DSU's sixth straight in the series and sweeps the season series this season as DeSales improves to 34-19 all-time vs. the Cougars.
  • DeSales keeps its two-game lead in the loss column in the race for the top seed in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament.
How it Happened
  • After MU scored the first basket of the game, DeSales took an 11-7 lead before the Cougars went on top at the 13:29 mark as the two teams went back-and-forth over the next several minutes.
  • Misericordia held a one-point advantage (21-20) at the 7:55 mark before scoring eight straight points to claim its largest advantage of the game (29-20) and took a four-point lead (34-30) in the halftime locker room.
  • DeSales got within a couple of times early in the second-half but Misericordia kept answering any Bulldog run leading by six (57-51) at the 10:45 mark.
  • Edwards scored four straight points sparking a 13-0 run that gave DSU a 64-57 lead finished off by five straight points from first-year Caleb Gibbs at the 8:30 mark.
  • DSU held off several Misericordia chances at tying the game and continued to lead by six (82-76) with 2:13 remaining.
  • MU got three straight putbacks from Nick Hornung around two empty possessions from the Bulldogs tying the game at 82 with 25 seconds left.
  • Out of a timeout, the Bulldogs set-up in a 1-4 with senior Matt Kachelries at the top of the key.
  • Kachleries drove right and his running lay-up came off the board long in front of the rim where Edwards was waiting alone for the tip-in and a last second 3/4 court shot was well off the mark for the Cougars as the buzzer sounded and DeSales left with the important road win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Kachelries led all scorers with 23 points and handed out eight dimes in the win.
  • Edwards finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • In total 11 players reached the scoring column for the Bulldogs.
For the Foes
  • Misericordia had six players in double digits led by Kevin Lazdowsky with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Hornung had 14 points and eight boards.
  • Elijah Rosenthal finished with 13 points and Derek Smith had 11 tallies.
  • Nate Kreitzer and Joseph Baldachino each had 10 points in the loss.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales shook of a poor shooting first-half to hit 57.1 percent in the second half and 46.3 percent for the game scoring 54 points over the final 20 minutes.
  • Misericordia was on fire from deep hitting 14 3's and shooting 45.2 percent outside the arc.
  • The Cougars had a slight advantage on the glass, 36-35, but the Bulldogs out-scored MU, 38-16, in the paint.
