Late Run Lifts Women's Basketball past Moravian, 63-52

Center Valley, PA (November 22, 2022) - The DeSales University women's basketball team went on a 14-0 run over the final 5:24 of the game to open the season 4-0 in a 63-52 win over local rival Moravian University on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 63, Moravian - 52
  • Records: DeSales (4-0 Overall); Moravian (2-4 Overall)
  • This was the 47th career meeting between the two teams with DSU now holding a 27-20 lead in the all-time series after its fourth straight win in the series. The Bulldogs improve to 14-10 vs. the Greyhounds at home.
  • DeSales extends its school-record home win streak to 29 straight games with the win.
How it Happened
  • After Moravian was awarded two free throws before the game started on administrative technical foul, the Bulldogs opened the game scoring the first 13 points to take a 13-2 lead.
  • The Greyhounds slowly cut into the lead, cutting it down to seven by the end of the first quarter.
  • The lead grew to as many as 12 points aftera. quick 7-0 run to start the second quarter but once again Moravian chipped away and pulled to within five (35-30) at the half.
  • DeSales struggled to shoot the ball in the third quarter and MU took advantage using a 10-1 run to take a 40-36 lead midway thru the quarter.
  • DSU was the one chipping away at the deficit this time tying the game twice before Moravian took a 46-44 lead after three quarters of play.
  • The Bulldogs made an adjustment defensively midway thru the third quarter switching to a zone defense and it helped as Moravian shot just 1-for-13 from outside the arc in the second-half.
  • Trailing by three points (52-49) at the 5:24 mark, DeSales didn't allow another point finishing the game on a 14-0 run with senior Maria Newsome putting the exclamation point on the win with back-to-back buckets late in the run to push the lead up to nine points with 1:23 to go.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Junior Mikaela Reese led all scorers with 17 points and added eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
  • Senior Megan Bealer had her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Newsome finished with six points and five assists without committing a turnover.
  • Juniors Lindsey Welsh had nine points and fellow junior Amelia Saunders had eight points.
For the Foes
  • Kayla Yoegel had 13 points and Sam Osorio finished with a double-double, 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Tessa Zamolyi had eight points and 13 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs forced 17 turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers.
  • Moravian won the battle on the boards, 45-39, pulling down 16 offensive rebounds.
  • DSU struggled at the foul line hitting just 12-for-27 from the charity stripe.
  • DeSales shot 45.3 percent from the field and held Moravian to just 30.4 percent from the floor.
