Men's Soccer Upset Bid Falls Short in 4-2 Loss at Lebanon Valley

Annville, PA (November 1, 2023) - The DeSales University men's soccer team took a 2-0 halftime lead but was unabe to hold on falling to top seeded Lebanon Valley College, 4-2, in the MAC Freedom semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.

  • This was DSU's first appearance in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament since the 2017 season.
  • DSU is now 20-11-3 all-time vs. the Flying Dutchmen.
  • The Bulldogs season comes to an end with a 5-7-5 overall record.
How it Happened
  • Senior Elek McDonald volleying home a pass from junior Tristen Castellani in the 9th minute giving DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bulldogs kept the pressure on, taking a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute when junior Jake Hain put home a header off a free kick feed from sophomore Joseph Reteneller.
  • That lead stood into the half as the Bulldogs had upset on their mind.
  • LVC needed just 4:20 into the second-half to get the first goal and cut the margin in half.
  • The Flying Dutchmen found the tying goal in the 61st minute and eventually took the lead for good scoring in the 72nd minute before adding an insurance goal with six seconds left in the game.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • McDonald and Hain each scored their third goal of the season in the loss.
  • Sophomore Conner Zimmerman had 16 saves in between the pipes.
For the Foes
  • Nathan Prex, Matthew Weinstock-Coll, Ethan Groff, and Lucas Strange scored LVC's goals.
Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley had a 30-8 advantage in shots, 20-5 in shots on goal and dominated the second-half out-shooting DeSales, 21-4.
