Late Run Lifts Men's Basketball Past Alvernia, 68-63

Reading, PA (December 2, 2023) - A 9-0 run late in the second-half broke a tie at 46 lifting the DeSales University men's basketball team past Alvernia University, 68-63, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Jack McCloskey Court.

The Basics

  • The win moves DSU to 20-13 all-time vs. the Golden Wolves as the Bulldogs win their fifth straight in the series.
How it Happened
  • DSU was down four early before a 10-0 run gave the Bulldogs an early 13-7 lead.
  • Alvernia reclaimed the lead on a 10-2 run of its own as the rest of the half went back and forth and saw the Golden Wolves holding a 28-26 halftime advantage.
  • Most of the start of the second-half was the two teams trading baskets as neither team led by more than five points and was tied at 46 with 8:39 remaining.
  • Senior Mason Barnes hit a second-chance three-pointer giving DSU a 49-46 lead that ignited a 9-0 run in which senior Will Bowen scored the final six points of the spurt giving DSU a 55-46 lead with 5;59 left to play.
  • After some back-and-forth the lead was 10 with 54 ticks left before Alvernia scored five straight around a Bulldog turnover to make it a five-point game with 35 seconds left.
  • Senior Christin Guldin made one free throw and the Golden Wolves scored again with 28 ticks remaining to make it a four-point game.
  • Guldin once again made just 1-of-2 but DSU got a stop on the other end and Barnes all but sealed the win with two free throws to make it a seven-point game with 18 seconds left.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Bowen finished with a team-high 15 points adding five boards.
  • Guldin had 11 points and Barnes totaled 10 points.
  • Senior Ryan Boylan finished with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
  • Senior Elijah Eberly had eight points and six rebounds also off the bench.
For the Foes
  • Alex Cercado had 18 points to lead Alvernia off the bench.
  • Jakob Kelly finished with 11 points and Robert Mullan added 10 points.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales out-rebounded Alvernia, 43-32, for the game.
  • The Bulldogs also held the Golden Wolves to just 38.1 percent shooting and 6-for-28 from outside the arc.
  • DSU was a very efficient 19-for-25 from the free throw line.
